The quality of the water used in autoclaves can have a significant impact on their performance and the effectiveness of the sterilisation process, as well as the lifespan of the machine itself. Normal tap water contains a wide range of minerals, ions and particles that are safe for human consumption, but do impact autoclave performance and longevity by circulating around the machine. Scale builds up on components and in the chamber itself, interfering with correct function and sterilisation.
There are a few ways to purify water before using it in an autoclave, such as using a reverse osmosis machine or distilling the water first. We always recommend and advocate the use of a TDS Meter to test the number of impurities in the water before every use.
